Welcome to Year 3

We are delighted to be your new teachers and look forward to working with you and your family this year.

Ms Aslam and Mrs Fiaz are the class teachers. Ms Aslam teaches the class on a Monday and Tuesday.  Mrs Fiaz teaches the class on a Wednesday morning and all day Thursday and Friday.  In addition, Ms Cusack will be teaching the class for part of Wednesday afternoon.

Ms Foulkes and Mr Mahmood support the children in class.

Key Information

Your child will be given homework on a THURSDAY, this must be completed and brought back to school by the following Thursday. It is important your child completes their homework.

Reading

It is very important that your child brings this book home and back to school daily as no new books will be allowed home if it is not brought in. It is equally as important that your child reads every evening for at least 10 minutes. This can be independently, with an older sibling or adult.

Please remember to sign your child’s reading record.

 

Subject Overview Autumn Term 1

This half term our school value is ‘Thankfulness’. The children will discuss the importance of how to be grateful to God for our blessings during reflection.

This term we will be:

  • In English we will be reading ‘Seal Surfer’ by Michael Foreman and concluding the half term by writing a
    letter from the point of view of a character in the story.
  • We will also be learning new spelling rules and patterns.
  • The first unit in our Maths is ‘Addition and Subtraction- bridging to 10’ and followed by ‘Numbers to 1000.’
  • We are looking forward to learning about Movement and Nutrition in Science.
  • In Art, children will use various mark making techniques in drawing. This will enhance the children’s abilities to describe lines and control the materials they use.
  • PE will enjoy PE every Wednesday and the children will focus on Invasion Games this half term.
  • In RE we will be look at God’s Creation and what Christians learn from the story of creation.
  • In History we will be learning about the Stone Age and the changes to Britain.
  • In Life Education, children will learn about being safe, leaning out of windows.

Subject Overview Autumn Term 2

This half term our school value is ‘Thankfulness’. The children will discuss the importance of how to be grateful to God for our blessings during reflection.

This term we will be:

  • In English we will reading the book ‘Winter’s Child’. At the end of the unit we will be writing our very own fantasy story.
  • We will also be learning new spelling patterns. Please continue to practise these at home. Your child will come home with new spelling every Monday. 
  • In Maths, we will be focusing on composition and calculation of three – digit numbers
  • In Science we will focus on Magnets and Forces.
  • In DT the children will learn about seasonal foods and create some delicious recipes.
  • Invasion games is a popular unit in PE and children will enjoy that this half term.
  • In RE we will be focusing on the importance of God and the birth of Jesus.
  • In Geography, the children will learn about rainforests around the world. 

Subject Overview Spring Term 1

Our Christian Value this half term is Love

This term we will be:

  • In English we will be writing a story adaptation based on ‘The Stone Age Boy’ text.
  • We will also be learning new spelling patterns during our Read Write Inc. spelling sessions.
  • Focusing on Right Angles and Manipulating the Additive Relationship and Securing Mental Calculations in Maths.
  • We are learning about Rocks and Soils in Science. Children identify and group rocks, they understand the process of fossil formation and make their very own fossils!
  • In Art we will be looking at Painting and Mixed Media- the children will be creating beautiful prehistoric art using charcoal and herbs/spices!
  • Following on from Stone Age, in History we will be learning about the Bronze Age and Iron Age.
  • In RE, the children will look at the topic ‘How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim?’’
  • In Computing, year 3 will be learning about the importance of online safety.
  • In Life Education, we will be looking at them topic of stealing. 

Subject Overview Spring Term 2

Our whole school value this half term is Trust

This term we will be:

  • In English we will be writing a story adaptation based on ‘The Journey’ text.
  • We will also be learning new spelling patterns during our Read Write Inc. spelling sessions.
  • We are focusing on column addition, subtraction and 2,4,8 times table in Maths.
  • We are learning about Light and Shadows in Science. We will be exploring the link between light and darkness, observing reflections and investigating different factors that affect shadows.
  • In D&T we will be exploring pneumatics and designing and making our own pneumatic toys.
  • In Geography we will be learning about the Earth’s structure.
  • In RE, the children will look at the topic ‘How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Jew?’’
  • In Computing, year 3 will be learning about Computing systems and networks..
  • In Life Education, we will be looking at the topic of Feelings, focusing on grief.

Subject Overview Summer Term 1

Our whole school value this half term is Friendship. We will be looking at aspects and qualities of friendship and how sacred they are.

This term we will be:

  • In Maths pupils will continue with the 2, 4, and 8 times table unit. The children will begin the ‘Fractions’ topic
  •  In English we will be reading ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker. The children will have write an adventure story based on ‘Journey’ using the language of Berlie Doherty.
  • In Science we will be learning about ‘Plants and Reproduction.’ We will explore the plant anatomy, and the lifecycle of flowering plants;’
  • In History we will be learning about the Victorians. We will also have an opportunity to learn about our school, which was built in 1850. We cannot wait!
  • In R.E we will be learning about what kind of world Jesus want. The children will make links between bible texts and the Gospels. How does the bible make links to the world today?
  •  In Computing the children will be familiarising themselves with creating media.
  • In Art we will explore sculpture. The children will learn about abstract shape and space.
  •  In P.E we will be taking part and building skills to do with net wall. The children will learn about striking and fielding.
  • In Life Education we will be learning about the importance of looking after our world.

Subject Overview Summer Term 2

Our whole school value this half term is Respect.

This term we will be:

  • In Maths pupils will continue with the ‘Fractions’ topic and we also learn about parallel and perpendicular sides in polygons.
  • In English we will be reading ‘Zeraffa Giraffa’ by Dianne Hofmeyr. The children will have write a persuasive piece of writing based on ‘ZeraffaGiraffa’.
  • In Science we will be learning about ‘Making Connections’. We will be investigating grip strength and handspan.
  • In Geography we will be learning about the countries of Europe. We will be focusing closely on France.
  • In R.E we will be learning about ‘How and why do people try to make the world a better place. The children will make links between bible texts and the Gospels. How does the bible make links to the world today?
  • In Computing the children will be creating a trailer using ipads.
  • In Art we will explore structures. The children will construct their own castles.
  • In P.E we will be taking part and building skills in Athletics
  • In Life Education we will be learning about being safe in the car.
