Welcome to Year 6

We are delighted to be your new teachers and look forward to working with you and your family this year.

Mrs Dunkin is the class teacher and is in school every day. Mrs Bostock and Mrs Munir support the children within the class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff. You can get in touch by using the class DoJo App.

Please order your child’s school dinner using School Grid.
P.E is on Tuesday. Please can the children wear the appropriate PE Kit.
A water bottle should be brought into school daily.
Please notify school in writing if you give permission for your child to walk home alone from school.
As the weather becomes colder, please ensure that your child brings a suitable waterproof coat to school.

Reading

Children should read at home for at least 15 minutes each day. They should bring their red bag and reading book into school every day.

Additional homework tasks will be sent home as appropriate on a weekly basis.

Our whole school value this half term is Thankfulness.

This term we will be:

Reading the graphic novel King Kong by Anthony Browne and writing our own action/ adventure story.
Recapping the foundations of Key Stage 2 grammar, punctuation and spelling. Learning to show character through dialogue.
Improving our reading comprehension skills by examining different question types using VIPERS and Reading Buddies.
Calculating using our knowledge of mathematical structures and finding multiples of 1000 in Maths. We will also using and applying numbers to 10million.
Understanding how scientists classify living things and creating our own classification keys.
Finding out who the Vikings were in history and what we can learn from them.
Learning about our local area in Geography.
In R.E, Creation and science: conflicting or complementary?
Exploring how programs are coded in Computing.
In Art and Design exploring photography.
Playing and listening to various genres of Music with the Bury Music Service.
Invasion games and fitness in P.E with EdStart.

Preparing for Christmas through Advent.
Reading The Place for Me, stories about the Windrush Generation. Then, we will be writing an information leaflet based around events linked with Black History Month.
Revising the use of parentheses and modal verbs when writing non-fiction texts.
Improving our reading comprehension skills by examining different question types using VIPERS and Reading Buddies
Exploring numbers up to ten million; drawing, composing and decomposing shapes in Maths.
Understanding how light travels.
Continuing to find out who the Vikings were in History and what we can learn from them.
Learning about our local area in Geography.
Life Education: charity project and highlighting the risks of alcohol.
Exploring how programs are coded in Computing.
Designing and making waistcoats for a teddy bear.
Answering the question as to why some people believe in God and some do not

Reading The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde and then rewriting the story from another character’s perspective.
Revising the use of the subjunctive form and the passive voice in our grammar sessions. We will also be looking at GPS questions in preparation for the SATs
Improving our reading comprehension skills by examining different question types using VIPERS and Reading Buddies
Multiplication and division in Maths, then exploring area and perimeter.
Investigating Evolution and Inheritance in Science and continuing to find out how light travels.
Learning about Earth matters, the climate and biomes in Geography.
Life Education: the consequences of stealing and the risks of alcohol.
Exploring Publishing tools in Computing.
Making our voices heard in Art.
Answering the question as to why Hindus want to be good.
Listening and composing with Bury Music Service.

This term we will be:

Exploring the text The Day War Came by Nicola Davies. We will then be writing a formal letter inspired by it.
In GPS, we are revising word classes and tenses, including using the passive voice.
Improving our reading comprehension skills by examining different question types using VIPERS and Reading Buddies
Continuing our learning and making links between fractions, decimals and percentages. We will also be looking at ratio, perimeter and ratio.
Concluding our understanding inheritance and evolution in science. Then moving on to study electricity.
Deepening our study into the Maya Civilisation in History.
Learning what Jesus did to save people according to Christians.
Digital Literacy and Arthouse Animation in Computing.
Singing part songs and rounds in Music.
Ball skills in PE
In DT we are combining science and practical skills developing a Steady Hand game.
In Life Education we are looking at things that may worry us.
