As a rights respecting school we at Holy Trinity follow the UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) programme. This is an award based on equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. We encourage the children and the school community to work together to learn about children’s rights and put them into practice everyday.
Rights Respecting schools are dedicated to putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of our school ethos enabling all children to develop their abilities, interests and talents, allowing them to flourish and thrive while at Holy Trinity. The UNCRC consists of 42 Articles, which are also known as rights. These are all rights which children should have.
The RRSA consists of 3 stages:
Bronze Stage – Rights Committed
Silver Stage – Rights Aware
Gold Stage – Rights Respecting
The Rights Respecting School approach promotes our courageous advocacy by empowering pupils to understand their rights and the rights of others, encouraging them to speak up and take action for justice and equality. Through promoting the values of respect, kindness, and empathy, pupils learn to advocate for the rights of themselves and others, fostering a sense of social responsibility and nurturing their moral compass.
This approach also enables pupils to flourish and develop spiritually by instilling values of fairness, inclusivity, and compassion. By learning about and respecting the rights of all individuals, pupils develop a deeper understanding of human dignity and the interconnectedness of humanity. This fosters a sense of belonging and empathy, allowing them to develop spiritually by embracing values that align with their own beliefs and nurturing a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.
The Rights Respecting School approach provides opportunities for pupils to explore global issues, diverse perspectives, and social justice topics, fostering critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of agency. Pupils are encouraged to take positive action, both within their school community and beyond, to create a more just and equitable world. This engagement in courageous advocacy not only promotes the flourishing of pupils as individuals but also cultivates their spiritual growth by connecting their beliefs and values with tangible actions that make a positive difference in the world.
Rights can be seen all around Holy Trinity. All classes have class charters, which have been chosen by the children in each class as ones they want to focus on. All our planning has been amended to include the Articles from the UNCRC. Therefore children are learning about their rights through their lessons and assemblies also have a focus on rights.
Holy Trinity is proud to be at the Silver stage and we are on the journey towards Gold.
